The next Battlefield will return to a modern setting with traditional classes

And traditional 64 player multiplayer!

In an interview with IGN, Vince Zampella has revealed some important core information about the next release in the Battlefield franchise. Vincie also goes into detail on the thinking behind the decision making such as getting the core of the game right before building back on top of it and mentions regaining the trust of loyal fans.

Whilst the fanbase will be waiting to play the game before casting judgement, the changes are a solid step in the right direction:

  • Return to modern setting
  • Return to 64 player multiplayer
  • Return to traditional classes
  • Returning to core Battlefield which the team relates to Battlefield 3 & 4

There are some great quotes from Vince throughout the IGN article such as “I’d rather have nice, dense, really nice, well-designed play spaces. Some of them are really good. I can’t wait for you to see some of them.”

I highly recommend reading the full article to understand the direction further as some of this feels like it contends with an earlier statement from EA CEO Andrew Wilson where he calls this next Battlefield game “one of the most ambitious projects” but it sounds like there will be multiple pillars to the game. There is also acknowledgement of Nintendo being a great partner of EA.

The next Battlefield could release as early as 2025 from developers DICE, Motive, Ripple Effect, and Criterion.
