The September Xbox Update has a bit going on

A little bit of something for everyone!

Compact Xbox Game Bar on PC

Over on Xbox Wire, Microsoft have announced what is featured in the September updates and they cover a little bit of everything.

The Xbox is getting the ability to pre-download game updates by finding the updates waiting in “My Games & Apps > Manage > Updates”. The feature is initially supported by Minecraft, Sea of Thieves and Cassette Beasts with more games coming soon. The console will now also allow you to get more notifications for games in your wish list (can be managed in notification settings) such as when a game is released, enters Game Pass or becomes available in the Free Play Days.

All Windows users are getting access to the Compact Game Bar feature which allows the game bar to act quite similarly to the Xbox Guide. In Compact Mode, you’ll be able to access everything with a controller and access the usual things including “view recently played games, access common game launchers and other gaming utilities, and explore the Widget Store, where you can discover and manage widget applications.” You will also now be able to close a game from the Game Bar. This will prove most helpful for handheld PC users.

Also over on Windows, improvements have been made to managing game files, you can now simply right click and select manage on any installed game and start selecting which content you want installed.

Lastly, the Xbox Game Pass mobile app is being merged into the existing Xbox App.

Key features – like the ability to explore Game Pass and manage your membership – will now be found in one place with the Xbox app on mobile. You’ll be able to browse the full Game Pass catalog to find your favorite games and stay in the loop with alerts for new games coming to the service. If you’re a Game Pass Ultimate member, you’ll also be able to view and claim your Perks. Game Pass Ultimate members can also stream select games through Xbox Cloud Gaming on their iOS or Android devices using a supported browser at xbox.com/play.

The last sentence implies that the Xbox Game Pass Beta apps ability to stream xCloud games to your phone will be dropped and browser based streaming will be the path forward on Android (as well as iOS).
