Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun Review

For the Emperor!

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a fast-paced, retro-inspired first-person shooter set in the grimdark universe of Warhammer 40,000. Developed by Auroch Digital and published by Focus Entertainment, the game hearkens back to the classic shooters of the 90s, such as Doom and Quake and Wolfenstein but with a Warhammer 40K twist That turns it into one of the best boomer shooters on the market.

Story Overview:

The game takes place during the Age of the Imperium in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, a time when humanity is under constant threat from various alien forces, traitors, and dark powers. Players take on the role of a Space Marine, a genetically enhanced super-soldier of the Adeptus Astartes, tasked with protecting humanity from its enemies.

The plot centre’s around a Space Marine named Malum Caedo, as he embarks on a brutal mission to eliminate the forces of Chaos that are threatening planet Graia the Adeptus Mechanicus Forge World two years after the events of Warhammer 40k Space marine. The storyline unfolds across multiple levels, with Caedo battling hordes of traitors, daemons, and other deadly enemies as he journeys through hostile environments, uncovering dark secrets and facing insurmountable odds.

Inquisitor Seibel of the Ordo Malleus revealed that rogue Tech-priests of Graia had experimented with the remains of the late Inquisitor Drogan’s unstable and unique Warp-based power source — a small cylinder wreathed in potent blue energies — and the experiments have resulted in the opening of a Warp rift that have allowed the forces of Chaos to once more invade the Forge World.

Gameplay:

The core of Boltgun is its action-packed gameplay. The gameplay is designed to be quick and fluid, with a focus on running, gunning, and dodging attacks. The pace is relentless, with enemies constantly rushing the player from all directions, requiring constant movement and quick reflexes to stay alive.

As a Space Marine, Caedo has access to a wide array of powerful weapons inspired by the Warhammer 40K universe. The most iconic weapon is the Bolter, a powerful assault rifle that fires explosive rounds designed to tear through both armor and flesh. Alongside the Bolter, players can use a variety of other weapons, such as:

  • Chainsword: A melee weapon that can slice through enemies at close range.
  • Plasma Gun: A powerful energy weapon with devastating close-range impact.
  • Heavy Bolter: A larger, more powerful version of the standard Bolter, capable of mowing down large groups of enemies.
  • Flamer: A short-range weapon that sprays fire, burning enemies alive.

The game allows players to switch between these weapons during combat to adapt to different enemy types and situations.

Players face a variety of enemies from the forces of Chaos, including:

  • Chaos Space Marines: Elite enemies with powerful weaponry and armor.
  • Chaos Cultists: Human followers of the Chaos Gods who act as cannon fodder for the forces of Chaos.
  • Daemons: Fearsome creatures from the Warp, including demonic entities aligned with Khorne, Nurgle, and other Chaos Gods.
  • Other threats: Various Chaos-infested creatures and enemies tied to the lore of the Warhammer 40K universe.

Each enemy type presents its own challenge, requiring players to use different tactics and weapons to overcome them.

The game features linear, level-based progression, with environments designed to reflect the grimdark atmosphere of the Warhammer 40K universe. Levels include ruined cities, industrial complexes, alien temples, and more, each filled with enemy hordes, traps, and secrets to uncover. Exploration is key, as players can find hidden power-ups, upgrades, and health packs to help in their battle against the Chaos forces.

One of the standout features of Boltgun is its pixel-art graphics, which pay homage to classic 90s shooters. The levels, enemies, and weapons are all rendered in a pixelated style, giving the game a retro aesthetic that appeals to fans of the golden age of first-person shooters. Despite the retro visuals, the game maintains a high level of detail, creating an immersive and atmospheric experience.

The soundtrack is another stand out blending heavy metal riffs with synthwave elements, changeling the spirit of 90s FPS classics like Doom while also infusing it with modern production value. The thumping bass, fast drum beats, and soaring guitar solos make every moment feel like you’re fighting for survival in the Warhammer universe. Each track is designed to keep adrenaline levels high, making every encounter with enemies feel that much more epic.

As players progress through levels, they can collect power-ups that enhance their combat abilities. These power-ups can include health boosts, armor upgrades, and even temporary buffs like increased weapon damage or faster movement speed. The game also includes hidden items and secrets that reward exploration, offering players incentives to search every corner of the map.

At the end of certain levels, players will face off against massive and powerful boss enemies such as Lord of Change and Great Unclean One. These encounters require precise timing, strategy, and quick reflexes to defeat. The bosses are often larger-than-life Chaos entities or corrupted champions that challenge players with devastating attacks and overwhelming strength the only enemies in the game I would say are unfair at times but give you that amazing level of dark souls feeling when you beat them.

While the game is fast-paced, it also encourages strategic thinking. Players need to decide when to use ranged weapons and when to switch to melee attacks, depending on the type of enemies they face. The chaotic nature of the battles means players must manage resources like ammunition and health while constantly dealing with waves of enemies. Timing, positioning, and weapon selection are critical to surviving the relentless onslaught.

Conclusion
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun serves as a love letter to both retro FPS games and the iconic Warhammer 40K lore. The game’s fast-paced action, coupled with a nostalgic pixel-art aesthetic, offers a thrilling and intense combat experience that will appeal to fans of both classic shooters and the Warhammer 40K universe.
