Recent patents filed by Nintendo have unveiled several innovative features for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, including mouse functionality for the Joy-Con controllers, a new Pro Controller, and a charging stand.
Joy-Con Controllers with Mouse Functionality
Nintendo’s patent details a Joy-Con controller equipped with an optical sensor capable of detecting reflected light from surfaces, enabling it to function similarly to a computer mouse. This design allows for precise cursor control, potentially enhancing gameplay in genres like strategy and shooters. Illustrations within the patent depict the Joy-Con being used on surfaces, with button placements mimicking mouse clicks and scrolling.
One Joy-Con element missing from these diagrams is the C button that was visible in the reveal trailer for the console — but that could just be a case of the button being added to the device after this patent was filed in 2023.
New Pro Controller
The patent also introduces a new Pro Controller featuring a split design, allowing it to function as two separate controllers. Each half includes a mouse sensor, providing versatile control options for various gaming scenarios.
Charging Stand
Additionally, Nintendo has patented a charging stand designed to wirelessly charge the Joy-Con controllers. This stand utilizes magnetic attachments to securely hold the controllers in place during charging, ensuring they are properly aligned and powered.
Wrist Strap Attachment
Another patent shows that these Joy-Con will be able to slot into a wrist strap attachment that looks very similar to the ones for the original Switch. It seems that they attach to the Joy-Con via magnets. Which would make sense as one of the long standing rumours is that the Joy-Con would also attach to the console via Magnets.
Implications for the Nintendo Switch 2
These developments suggest that the Nintendo Switch 2 will offer enhanced control options, including mouse-like precision and versatile controller configurations. The inclusion of a wireless charging stand further indicates Nintendo’s commitment to improving user experience. While patents do not guarantee that these features will be present in the final product, they provide valuable insight into Nintendo’s design direction.
As the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 approaches, fans can look forward to these innovative features that aim to redefine gaming experiences on the platform.
