The survival-horror classic Resident Evil 5, originally released in 2009 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC,Resident Evil 5 marked a major shift in the series’ direction. While it maintained the franchise’s roots in horror, it also introduced more action-oriented gameplay, a departure from the slower, more atmospheric horror of Resident Evil 4.

Set in a fictional African country, players control Chris Redfield, now an experienced agent, alongside his partner Sheva Alomar, as they investigate a dangerous bio-terrorist threat. The game introduced a co-op multiplayer mode, allowing players to team up for the first time in the series’ history, which added a new layer of excitement and tension to the gameplay.
Although Resident Evil 5 was initially divisive due to its heavy focus on action and its somewhat departure from the traditional survival horror formula, it was still a commercial success, cementing itself as a fan-favorite. The game received positive reviews for its graphics (especially for its time), dynamic gameplay, and cooperative mechanics, which were ahead of its time in many ways.

Resident Evil 5’s upcoming NextGen port is sure to bring a fresh look and feel to the classic action-horror title. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer, the enhancements made possible by the PlayStation 5’s hardware will make revisiting Chris and Sheva’s dangerous mission a compelling experience. As Capcom continues to breathe new life into its iconic series, fans can look forward to even more Resident Evil content on the horizon, with Resident Evil 5 playing a key part in this resurgence.
