A standalone remake of the classic Counter-Strike 1.6, titled CS: Legacy, is set to launch on Steam in 2025. Developed by Midnight Madness, the team behind the CSPromod project, CS: Legacy is being built from the ground up using Valve’s 2013 Source Engine SDK. The developers aim to preserve the original’s essence while introducing modern enhancements, including significant rewrites to the renderer, shaders, and various systems.
The standalone remake of CS 1.6 will be “built from the ground up with 100% custom code and game assets,” according to the trailer’s description. While it will use the official Source engine, it will feature the developers’ “own major rewrites to the renderer, shaders and various system.”

The game will feature classic elements such as familiar audio cues, ragdoll animations, and remastered maps like Nuke. It is being developed as a free-to-play title, with an early beta available to Patreon supporters. An official release date has yet to be announced, but CS: Legacy is expected to enter Steam Early Access in 2025.

While the project has generated excitement among fans, there is some concern regarding Valve’s history of shutting down fan-made projects. However, Valve has previously allowed remakes like Black Mesa to be listed on Steam, suggesting potential support for CS: Legacy.
