Nintendo has confirmed that the game cartridges for the upcoming Switch 2 will intentionally have a foul taste, similar to the original Switch cartridges. This is achieved by coating them with a bitterant, likely denatonium benzoate, which is commonly used to deter ingestion of non-food items.
Takuhiro Dohta, Nintendo’s Technical Director, emphasized that this design choice aims to prevent accidental consumption, especially by children and animals. He advised against tasting the cartridges, stating, “We don’t want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption. We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you’ll spit it out.”
This approach aligns with Nintendo’s commitment to user safety, ensuring that the small, easily handled cartridges are not ingested by mistake. While some may be curious about the taste, it’s strongly discouraged to test it, given the intentional bitterness and the potential for discomfort.
