Recent classifications by the Australian Classification Board (ACB) suggest that Activision Blizzard is preparing to reintroduce the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 for modern gaming platforms. On April 3, 2025, both titles were assigned an MA 15+ rating, indicating mature content suitable for players aged 15 and over.
The ratings specify a “Cross-Gen Edition” for both games, with Modern Warfare 2 explicitly noted as a “PS5 Cross-Gen Edition.” This terminology suggests that the remastered versions will be available on multiple generations of consoles, including the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
These developments align with earlier rumour’s about remastered editions of these classic titles. Notably, while Modern Warfare 2 received a remastered campaign in 2020, Modern Warfare 3 has yet to see a comprehensive remaster. The new classifications hint at a more extensive re-release, potentially encompassing both the original campaigns and multiplayer modes.
As of now, Activision Blizzard has not officially announced any details regarding the release dates or additional content for these remastered editions. However, the recent ACB classifications provide strong indications that these projects are actively in development, with a production date listed as March 2025.
For Australian gamers, the MA 15+ rating is a standard classification for mature content. However, it’s worth noting that the original release of Modern Warfare 2 in 2009 sparked discussions about game content ratings in Australia, particularly concerning the controversial “No Russian” mission. The ACB’s decision to rate the remastered edition similarly reflects the evolving landscape of game content regulation in the country.
