Ubisoft appears to be reigniting the fires of one of its longest-running franchises, as Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown officially crosses a significant player milestone. With over two million players having now experienced the stylish metroidvania reboot, Ubisoft took to social media to tease fans with a cryptic but telling message:
“You’ve revived the legend. The Prince is back, and believe us — he’s just warming up.”

This statement, while not a formal announcement, has sparked widespread speculation that a sequel may be in the works—an unexpected twist following the tumultuous launch history of The Lost Crown.
A Game That Refused to Die
Initially released in January 2024, The Lost Crown was critically praised for its fluid combat, intricate level design, and bold reimagining of the franchise’s classic formula it tops my personal favourite games of last year. Despite near-universal acclaim from reviewers, the game struggled commercially in its early weeks. Insider sources reported that Ubisoft, frustrated by underwhelming launch sales, disbanded the Montpellier-based development team shortly after release. Proposals for a sequel were allegedly shelved, and key staff were reassigned to other projects.
This left fans disappointed and confused, especially as the game began to build a strong word-of-mouth reputation. The turning point came when The Lost Crown was added to subscription services like PlayStation Plus and Ubisoft+. The wider accessibility dramatically boosted player numbers and brought renewed attention to a title many had initially overlooked.
Reversal of Fortune
Now, with the game surpassing two million players, Ubisoft is clearly paying attention. The “just warming up” line, coupled with the milestone celebration, suggests that the publisher may be reconsidering its previous stance. It’s unclear if this means the original team could be reassembled, or if a new studio would take the reins—but insiders believe discussions around a sequel have been revived behind the scenes.
Further supporting this theory is Ubisoft’s increasing investment in the Prince of Persia brand. In addition to The Lost Crown’s success, the company is currently supporting The Rogue Prince of Persia, a 2D roguelike in early access developed by Evil Empire. There’s also the long-delayed remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which remains in active development despite multiple setbacks.
What’s Next for the Prince?
At this point, no sequel has been officially greenlit. Ubisoft has not responded to requests for comment regarding future plans for The Lost Crown or the status of the disbanded team. However, if the publisher was testing the waters to gauge community interest, the reaction to this teaser should make things clear: fans want more.
It’s a classic case of a game finding its audience over time. If Ubisoft plays its cards right, The Lost Crown could become the foundation for a revitalized franchise—not just a one-off success. Whether this momentum leads to a full-blown sequel or simply more post-launch content remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the Prince’s story isn’t over yet and I will be there when it continues.
