PlayStation Officially Acquires teamLFG, Studio Joins PlayStation Studios Roster

Another bold move in PlayStation’s live-service evolution.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced the acquisition of teamLFG, the developer behind the critically acclaimed multiplayer title Project Reach, marking the studio’s entry into the PlayStation Studios family.

The news was confirmed via a post on the official PlayStation X (formerly Twitter) account, welcoming the studio and teasing “exciting new projects already underway.”

“Welcome, teamLFG, to the PlayStation Studios family! We’re excited to see what incredible worlds you’ll create next,” reads the post.

While details of the acquisition remain under wraps, sources familiar with the deal suggest that discussions between Sony and teamLFG began shortly after Project Reach crossed five million players in late 2024. The studio’s unique approach to live-service mechanics and community-driven content reportedly caught the attention of key PlayStation executives.

What Is teamLFG?

Founded in 2021 by ex-Bungie and Respawn developers, teamLFG quickly built a reputation for high-quality, systems-driven multiplayer games. Their debut title, Project Reach, launched in early access in 2023 and steadily grew into a sleeper hit across both PC and console platforms.

The studio’s design philosophy emphasizes cooperative gameplay, social systems, and seasonal narratives—elements that align closely with Sony’s growing focus on live-service experiences.

Why This Matters

Sony has made no secret of its intention to expand its portfolio beyond single-player blockbusters. With The Last of Us: Factions delayed indefinitely and several multiplayer projects still in development, the acquisition of teamLFG could be a strategic play to ensure the company has a steady pipeline of high-quality online content.

According to one industry insider who spoke to Insider Gaming on condition of anonymity, teamLFG is already developing a new IP under the PlayStation banner. The project is described as a “sci-fi extraction shooter with social hub integration,” and is reportedly targeting a 2027 release.

A Strategic Fit

The move also signals a broader trend within PlayStation Studios: diversifying its offerings without compromising on quality. Like Housemarque before them, teamLFG represents a studio with a proven vision that aligns with Sony’s evolving goals.

It remains to be seen how the studio will integrate into PlayStation’s first-party ecosystem, but early signs point toward creative freedom and long-term investment.

For now, fans can only speculate—but with PlayStation’s Summer Showcase just weeks away, we may hear more about teamLFG’s future sooner than expected.
