EA Entertainment Refocuses Strategy, Prioritizing Fewer Franchises

EA sharpens focus, betting big on fewer franchises for future growth.

Electronic Arts (EA) is undergoing a major transformation, realigning its entertainment division to focus on a smaller selection of high-performing franchises. The strategic shift, which has already resulted in studio closures and game cancellations, underscores EA’s commitment to streamlining development and maximizing the impact of its most successful titles.

A New Direction for EA Entertainment

The restructuring follows the company’s broader division of operations in 2023 into two core groups: EA Sports and EA Entertainment. Under the leadership of Laura Miele, EA Entertainment now seeks to concentrate its resources on fewer, but more commercially and critically proven franchises.

This realignment is not just a philosophical change—it’s already taking shape in the form of project cancellations and studio shutdowns. EA’s decision to close Cliffhanger Games, which was developing a Black Panther title, marks a major pivot away from riskier, unproven ventures. Similarly, a new game set in the Titanfall universe, codenamed R7, was scrapped earlier this year, resulting in layoffs at Respawn Entertainment.

Tightening the Belt: Risk Reduction in a Competitive Market

The video game industry has become increasingly volatile, with rising development costs and fierce competition. EA’s decision to limit its focus is seen by analysts as a proactive measure to reduce risk and consolidate its creative output around games with built-in audiences and guaranteed returns.

Franchises such as Apex Legends, the Star Wars Jedi series, and Iron Man (in development at Motive Studio) are at the heart of this new approach. While fans may lament the loss of fresh IPs or unique experimental titles, EA is doubling down on what works—banking on familiar names to fuel future growth.

Impact on Studios and Development Teams

The shake-up has also affected EA’s internal studios. BioWare, once a flagship developer under EA’s umbrella, has seen significant changes in staffing and direction. Following the underwhelming reception of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the studio is now prioritizing the next entry in the Mass Effect series—another move aligning with EA’s risk-averse strategy.

The decision to trim EA’s slate has been met with mixed reactions. Some industry insiders argue that focusing on fewer franchises will allow for higher quality, deeper narratives, and more polished gameplay. Critics, however, worry that EA could become stagnant, prioritizing financial safety over innovation.

Looking Ahead

Despite the turbulence, EA is not abandoning ambition entirely. Projects like Star Wars Jedi 3 and Iron Man remain in the pipeline, and there’s still cautious optimism surrounding new entries in the Mass Effect universe. EA has also expressed interest in leveraging its back catalog of IPs, suggesting that legacy franchises could see renewed life under this tighter framework.

In an industry increasingly defined by mega-franchises and massive live-service titles, EA’s pivot reflects broader market trends. Whether this strategy will pay off in the long term remains to be seen—but for now, EA Entertainment is betting big on fewer, safer bets.

  1. Pretty sure they are prioritising games with microtransaction and monetisation. E.G. FC Ultimate team, Apex…… anything that doesn’t really have a place for those two mechanics, not a priority, scrapped……. Black Panther, C&C, TitanFall anyone?…… GFY EA
