At Summer Game Fest 2025, developer Mundfish unveiled Atomic Heart 2, the highly anticipated sequel to their 2023 first-person shooter. Set in an alternate-history Soviet Union, the game expands upon its predecessor’s retro futuristic dystopian setting. Players will navigate a world teetering on the brink of collapse, facing new threats and uncovering deeper mysteries. The sequel promises enhanced RPG elements, a more immersive open world, and a focus on player freedom. While a specific release date hasn’t been announced, Atomic Heart 2 is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC .
A Dystopia Dialed Up to Eleven
The original game had you exploring a retro futuristic USSR gone totally bonkers. The sequel? It’s doubling down. The teaser shows a broader open world with new environments, twisted enemy designs, and a bigger emphasis on player choice. Think more immersion, more chaos, and more freedom in how you approach missions.
Mundfish says they’re expanding the RPG elements this time around that means deeper upgrades, more build variety, and the ability to play things your way. Whether that’s with a wrench, a railgun, or some kind of psychic technospear is up to you.
Melee, Mutants, Mayhem
Combat’s getting a major overhaul, too. It’s faster, more fluid, and nastier in all the right ways. We’re talking new enemy types, fresh powers, and some seriously brutal looking weapons. If you liked the crunch of the first game’s melee, this one looks like it’s dialling it up.
And yes the weirdness is still here. Killer ballerinas? Talking polymers? Mind-melting architecture? All signs point to yes.
Back in the USSR (Again)
Story wise, Atomic Heart 2 is picking up the pieces of the first game’s bizarre ending. There’s a new political crisis brewing, new factions at play, and the kind of sci-fi mystery that’ll have you questioning who or what you’re really fighting for.
We don’t have all the details yet, but if the first game scratched your itch for BioShock meets S.T.A.L.K.E.R. with a side of borscht, this sequel looks like it’s cooking up something even crazier.
We’ll be watching this one closely. Stay tuned to 1-Up Games for updates, trailers, and hands-on impressions as soon as we get ‘em.
