EA is reportedly setting an extraordinarily high bar for its upcoming Battlefield installment, with internal sources revealing a player count goal of 100 million. If achieved, this would make Battlefield 6 the most-played game in franchise history by a wide margin. But not everyone within the company believes the number is realistic.
According to multiple reports, Battlefield 6 is shaping up to be the most expensive Battlefield ever made, with a development budget exceeding $400 million. EA’s strategy to recoup that investment and drive player growth centers around one key component: a free-to-play battle royale mode, heavily inspired by Call of Duty: Warzone.
A Bold Vision
EA’s leadership believes a battle royale approach is the key to tapping into a massive global audience. Following the success of Warzone, which quickly amassed tens of millions of players, the idea is to offer a similarly accessible, free-to-play experience within the Battlefield universe. Paired with monetization via skins, battle passes, and potentially premium modes or early access perks, Battlefield 6 could serve as a major revenue driver assuming the player base is there.
But that’s a big “if.”
Historical Numbers Tell a Different Story
To put this 100 million target into context, Battlefield 1, one of the franchise’s most celebrated entries, reached roughly 30 million players. Battlefield 2042, despite strong marketing, struggled to maintain its audience and currently sits at around 22 million.
In comparison, games like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone have surpassed the 100 million mark, but only after sustained content updates, viral marketing moments, and years of iteration.
Internal Skepticism at DICE
Notably, reports suggest that developers within DICE, the studio behind Battlefield, are not entirely convinced the 100 million milestone is achievable. Sources describe the goal as “unrealistic” given the current competitive landscape and the franchise’s recent stumbles. Battlefield 2042 launched in a rough state and took over a year of updates to reach a more stable form, eroding some of the fanbase’s goodwill.
Risk, Reward, and the Future of Battlefield
Battlefield 6 is expected to be revealed later this year, with a tentative release window before April 2026. In addition to the battle royale, the game will reportedly feature traditional multiplayer modes, possibly a campaign, and next-gen exclusive features that leverage the power of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. With over $400 million poured into development and marketing, EA is betting big on a full franchise revival. Whether the pivot to free-to-play battle royale and massive player expectations pays off remains to be seen.
Battlefield 6 won’t just be another entry it’s EA’s moonshot for relevance in the live-service era.
