It’s been over a decade since the last major InFamous title graced a PlayStation console, but fans of the electrifying superhero series may have new reason to hope. In a recent interview, the co-creative director of Ghost of Yotei the upcoming samurai-inspired action-adventure from Sucker Punch Productions shared their continued affection for the InFamous franchise and expressed interest in potentially returning to it.
“I would love to work on more Infamous. I would love to see a trilogy re-release, but Sucker Punch is a one game at a time shop, and right now we are very focused on finishing ‘Ghost of Yōtei’” He Said “Sucker Punch is a one game at a time shop.”
That’s the most encouraging update fans have heard in years. While Sucker Punch has remained tight-lipped about the future of its older IPs most notably InFamous and Sly Cooper this is the first time in recent memory that someone at the studio has openly expressed a willingness to return to one of its legacy franchises.
The InFamous series debuted on PlayStation 3 in 2009 and quickly became one of the console’s most recognizable exclusives. Players took control of Cole MacGrath, a bike messenger turned conduit a human with superpowers navigating a decaying city full of danger and moral dilemmas. The series was praised for its unique mix of parkour, comic book-style storytelling, and branching karma system that allowed players to shape the protagonist’s path as a hero or a villain.
Following two critically acclaimed entries on PS3, the series leapt to PlayStation 4 with InFamous: Second Son in 2014, introducing a new protagonist, Delsin Rowe, and stunning fans with its visual fidelity and expanded superpower arsenal. A standalone prequel, First Light, followed later that year, focusing on fan-favorite character Fetch.
Despite their success, Sucker Punch shifted gears after First Light, moving on to develop Ghost of Tsushima a samurai epic set during the Mongol invasion of Japan. That game became a breakout hit, earning widespread acclaim and commercial success, and establishing a new identity for the studio. Its sequel, Ghost of Yotei, is currently in development for PlayStation 5.
While the studio has confirmed in the past that there are no active plans for InFamous or Sly Cooper sequels, the co-creative director’s latest comments offer a glimmer of hope. It’s clear the passion for the series remains, even if timing and resources haven’t aligned yet.
The resurgence of superhero games with titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine commanding attention has also reignited interest in franchises like InFamous, which was once one of PlayStation’s leading power fantasies. A revival of the series could not only tap into nostalgia but also re-establish InFamous as a modern competitor in the genre.
For now, fans will have to wait and see what the future holds. But with Sucker Punch still carrying a torch for Cole MacGrath and company, the chances of an InFamous comeback just got a little brighter.
