The Pokémon Company has officially unveiled the next expansion for Pokémon TCG Pocket, and it’s one that taps deep into the hearts of longtime fans. Titled Wisdom of Sea and Sky, the upcoming set is steeped in nostalgia, with a complete focus on Generation II’s Johto region. Set to release globally between July 29 and 31, 2025, this expansion is already generating major buzz thanks to its featured Pokémon, trading system overhaul, and expansive card list that celebrates a beloved era in the franchise.
A Return to Johto
For many players, Johto was where their Pokémon journey began or truly came alive. Now, TCG Pocket players get to revisit that world through a visually rich, digital-first card set that places iconic figures like Ho-Oh, Lugia, and the classic starters Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile front and center. Early previews suggest this set will lean heavily on themes of balance, elemental harmony, and the bond between land, sea, and sky a motif perfectly symbolized by the set’s legendary mascots.
Both Ho-Oh EX and Lugia EX headline the new lineup, supported by a host of Johto-native Pokémon like Togepi, Noctowl, Ampharos, and Donphan. Several beloved baby Pokémon also make their debut in TCG Pocket, including Pichu, Cleffa, and Igglybuff, alongside fan-favorite evolutions like Espeon EX and Umbreon EX. Full-art cards for Pokémon such as Togepi, Chikorita, and Gyarados including a teased red shiny variant add to the collectability and appeal.

More Than Just Cards: A New Trade System
The Wisdom of Sea and Sky update isn’t just cosmetic. It introduces major changes to the game’s core systems most notably, how players trade cards. Pokémon TCG Pocket will retire its original trade token system and replace it with something called Shinedust.
Unlike trade tokens, which could be acquired through microtransactions, Shinedust is earned purely through gameplay battles, daily log-ins, and event participation. This shift marks a meaningful step toward a more player-friendly, reward-based economy. Shinedust can be exchanged for cards in a new Wishlist feature, where players can identify their most-wanted items. If both players have compatible wants, the trade is locked in instantly.
This change has been praised as a move toward fairness and accessibility. In a landscape often clouded by pay-to-win mechanics, Pokémon TCG Pocket seems to be carving out a different path.
Trainers, Rivals, and Lore-Driven Design
In addition to new Pokémon, Wisdom of Sea and Sky will spotlight characters from Johto’s lore, such as Silver the fierce rival from Gold and Silver and possibly Lyra, the modern redesign of the female protagonist. Trainer and Supporter cards inspired by their teams and in-game personalities will offer new strategic layers to online deck-building.
Some leaked cards reference the Tin Tower and Whirl Islands, further grounding this set in Johto’s mysticism. These details may seem minor to casual players, but to fans steeped in Pokémon lore, they elevate the experience, turning each card into a narrative piece as much as a gameplay element.

For Pokémon TCG Pocket, this release could be a watershed moment. Since its debut in October 2024, the mobile-based card game has seen steady growth, but this is the first expansion to truly embrace a region-wide identity. It’s no secret that Gen II has long been a fan favorite, and The Pokémon Company is wisely banking on that nostalgia.
But more than just leaning on the past, Wisdom of Sea and Sky shows that Pokémon is still evolving. The move toward free-to-earn currencies and a clearer value system speaks to growing concerns among players about fairness and fun. Pokémon has always been about the joy of collecting, sharing, and battling and this update brings that spirit back to the forefront.
What’s Next?
With over 200 new cards expected and more details set to emerge in the days leading up to release, fans can expect a flurry of news. The full card list, official trailer, and patch notes should drop during or just after the upcoming Pokémon Presents event.
In-game events and solo missions themed around Johto will roll out shortly after launch, offering new challenges, exclusive card sleeves, and background music remixes from Gold and Silver. For returning players, it’s the perfect excuse to log back in. For newcomers, it’s a welcoming, nostalgia-rich entry point that promises substance as well as style.
At its heart, Wisdom of Sea and Sky feels like a love letter to a generation of players who grew up catching Pokémon on the Game Boy Color. And in today’s fragmented gaming world, that kind of focused, heartfelt design is more valuable than ever.
The Johto region taught players the meaning of patience, exploration, and connection. With this latest expansion, Pokémon TCG Pocket seems to have learned those lessons too and is ready to share them with a whole new generation.
