After more than a decade of fan anticipation and cliffhanger speculation, Darksiders IV has finally been unveiled. THQ Nordic used its 2025 Digital Showcase to deliver the long-awaited confirmation that the next entry in the apocalyptic action-adventure saga is not only real but also in active development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
The trailer, which aired during the showcase, was brief but powerful a moody cinematic set against a storm of fire and brimstone, with a narrator intoning about the end of time, betrayal, and redemption. The final frame left no room for doubt: all four Horsemen of the Apocalypse would return, and this time, they wouldn’t be riding solo.
A Long-Awaited Sequel
To appreciate the weight of this announcement, it’s worth revisiting the ending of the first Darksiders. Released in 2010, the original title concluded with War, the first Horseman, defiantly summoning his siblings Death, Fury, and Strife as the heavens and hells closed in. The promise of a full-scale showdown featuring all four Horsemen was seared into the memories of fans, but what followed were more standalone entries Darksiders II followed Death, Darksiders III focused on Fury, and Darksiders Genesis offered a top-down take with Strife and War. Each game explored different gameplay ideas, but none delivered the true ensemble experience that players had been waiting for.
Until now.
Four Horsemen. One War.
THQ Nordic has confirmed that Darksiders IV will allow players to take control of any of the Four Horsemen in a story that picks up immediately after the events of the first game. This means we’re not just getting more of the same we’re returning to the unresolved war that started it all.
What to Expect From Gameplay
While the teaser didn’t show gameplay, the developers at Gunfire Games have promised a return to the series’ signature third-person action with open-ended exploration, puzzle-solving, and stylish combat. Think of it as a mature Zelda-like experience drenched in biblical lore and brutal melee.
No Release Date Yet
As of now, Darksiders IV has no firm release window. THQ Nordic and Gunfire Games were careful not to overpromise, stating that development is still in the early stages. That said, the confirmation alone is a seismic moment for long-time fans. After years of uncertainty, scattered spin-offs, and shifting tones, the franchise finally feels like it’s returning to its roots apocalyptic, operatic, and united.
Looking Ahead
For fans who have held out hope since 2010, this announcement feels like vindication. It’s a game built on the promises made fifteen years ago, now poised to deliver a full-scale, four-Horsemen war.
Whether the final product can match the weight of its ambition remains to be seen. But for now, the flame is lit once again. The Horsemen ride together.
