It seems Capcom’s appetite for remaking classic Resident Evil titles isn’t slowing down any time soon. According to a well-known series insider, fans could be in for two more re-imaginings within the next few years and they’re not the ones most people might have guessed.
The claim comes from AestheticGamer, better known to long-time followers of the franchise as Dusk Golem. Posting on social media earlier this month, they suggested that Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil: Code Veronica are currently in development, with tentative release windows pencilled in for 2027 and 2028, respectively. That would put them well after the expected launch of Resident Evil 9, which is believed to be the next major entry on Capcom’s slate.
Resident Evil Zero originally debuted on the Nintendo GameCube back in 2002. It served as a prequel to the original game, following rookie S.T.A.R.S. member Rebecca Chambers and escaped convict Billy Coen through the doomed Arklay Mountains expedition. While it’s been ported over the years, Zero never enjoyed the same widespread popularity as the numbered entries making it an interesting choice for a modern remake.
Code Veronica, on the other hand, has long been a fan favourite. Released in 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast, the game took players to a remote island and then an Antarctic facility, following siblings Claire and Chris Redfield in the aftermath of Resident Evil 2. For many, it’s the last of the “classic style” RE games yet to receive the kind of full-scale reimagining Capcom has applied to RE2, RE3, and RE4.
Officially, Capcom has been coy about its future plans. In interviews late last year, Resident Evil 4 remake director Yasuhiro Anpo confirmed that the company intends to keep producing remakes, but avoided naming which games might be next. Given the enormous commercial success of recent entries, it’s not hard to see why they’d want to keep revisiting their back catalogue.
Still, as with any unconfirmed leak, a pinch of salt is required. Game development timelines can change, projects can be pushed back, and sometimes concepts never make it to market. For now, all fans can do is speculate and perhaps start imagining what a next-gen take on Rebecca, Billy, Claire, and Chris might look like.
If the rumour proves accurate, the next decade could be another golden era for Resident Evil’s older chapters. But until Capcom makes it official, the wait much like the dark hallways of the Spencer Mansion will be tense, quiet, and full of anticipation.
