The long-running MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV may have another platform in its future. During Gamescom 2025, producer and director Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida revealed that Square Enix has held “positive discussions” with Nintendo regarding a possible Switch 2 release of the game.
Yoshida has made no secret of his desire to bring Final Fantasy XIV to as many players as possible, and the idea of making the game more accessible continues to drive his team. Speaking at the event, he explained that Square Enix has been in ongoing contact with Nintendo and that the tone of those talks has been encouraging.
While nothing has been confirmed, Yoshida hinted that a Switch 2 edition would allow players to enjoy the MMO in new ways. Gathering resources, crafting items, or simply exploring Eorzea could work well in a handheld setting, while larger group activities such as raids might still be best suited for PC or console play.
“We are putting in our best efforts to ensure that this happens,” Yoshida said, while carefully tempering expectations. “I consider the possibilities very positively, but I hope players will look forward to hopefully good news in the future.”
This isn’t the first time Final Fantasy XIV has been linked to a Nintendo platform. Over the years, Yoshida has expressed interest in expanding beyond PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, but hardware limitations have often stood in the way. With Switch 2 rumored to feature significantly improved specs, that barrier may finally be lifting.
Interestingly, Yoshida also mentioned Final Fantasy XVI in the same breath, suggesting Square Enix would like to see more of its flagship titles available on Nintendo’s next system. That aligns with the publisher’s recent push for broader platform support, bringing several older Final Fantasy entries to Switch and Xbox.
For now, fans will need to be patient. “Positive discussions” are a good sign, but they don’t mean development has begun. Still, the fact that Square Enix and Nintendo are talking seriously about it should be enough to give hope to anyone eager to take Final Fantasy XIV on the go.
