Destiny 2: Renegades Expansion Arrives December 2, Ash & Iron Update Live Now

STAR WARS

Bungie isn’t slowing down as Destiny 2 heads toward the final stretch of its “Year of Prophecy.” The studio has confirmed that the game’s next big expansion, Renegades, will launch worldwide on December 2, 2025, while the brand-new Ash & Iron update has gone live today.

Renegades A Frontier of Outlaws and Blasters

Renegades is shaping up to be one of the boldest additions Destiny 2 has seen in years. Set against the backdrop of the lawless edges of the solar system, it introduces a gritty frontier theme with new systems, characters, and activities.

The expansion’s centrepiece is the Lawless Frontier mode, which Bungie describes as a high-risk, high-reward experience for fireteams willing to test their survival skills against rival factions. Alongside this comes a new social hub, Tharsis Outpost, a gathering place for Guardians to plan runs, trade with Syndicate contacts, and show off their latest gear.

One of the most eye-catching changes is the debut of the Blaster, a fresh weapon archetype that draws inspiration from classic sci-fi shootouts. Instead of relying solely on traditional ammo drops, Blasters run on heat management, pushing players to balance sustained fire with cooldowns. Combined with the new Notoriety system, where choices about which Syndicate to align with unlock unique rewards, Renegades looks set to deliver a far more personal take on Guardian progression.

Ash & Iron Returning to the Plaguelands

While Renegades is still a couple of months away, Bungie isn’t leaving players waiting. The Ash & Iron update, available right now, takes Guardians back to a fan-favorite location: the Plaguelands, last explored during Destiny’s Rise of Iron era.

At the heart of the update is Reclaim, a three-player Fireteam Ops activity that mixes escalating battles against Cabal and Vex forces with dynamic objectives. The activity leans into the experimental side of Bungie’s design, offering changing encounters and a constant push against the clock.

The seasonal rewards track has also been refreshed, featuring 110 tiers of loot, including a brand-new Strand Exotic Pulse Rifle, a sleek armor ornament set, and a distinctive shader. Looking further ahead, Bungie has already teased an Exotic mission arriving October 7 and an Epic variant of the Desert Perpetual raid dropping on September 27, promising new challenges for veteran raiders.

Festival content is also locked in, with Festival of the Lost returning on October 21 and a large-scale Call to Arms event running from November 11 through December 1, leading right into Renegades’ launch.

A Promising Road Ahead

Taken together, Ash & Iron and Renegades set the tone for where Destiny 2 is heading as it nears the close of its latest narrative arc. Bungie seems intent on blending nostalgia such as the return to the Plaguelands with bold new experiments like the Blaster archetype and Syndicate Notoriety.

For long-time Guardians, this mix of old and new may strike the right balance. For newcomers or returning players, December 2 is shaping up to be an ideal moment to jump back in, with the world of Destiny once again expanding into uncharted territory.
