It looks like PlayStation fans might have something to look forward to sooner rather than later. According to several reliable leakers, Sony is preparing to host a new State of Play broadcast next week, though the company itself has yet to make anything official.
The whispers started on social media when insider NateTheHate hinted that a presentation was “coming soon,” before narrowing that down to “next week.” That comment quickly set the internet buzzing, as Sony’s showcase events are typically only announced a few days in advance.
What can fans expect if the rumour proves true? One of the biggest names being floated is Marvel’s Wolverine, the highly-anticipated project from Insomniac Games. The title has been kept under wraps since its reveal, and players are eager for a closer look at how the studio behind Spider-Man plans to tackle a darker, more brutal superhero.
Alongside that, speculation points toward updates on projects such as Phantom Blade 0 and Bungie’s revival of Marathon. There’s even chatter about a new God of War spinoff with a more compact, “Metroidvania-style” design though that’s more wishful thinking than hard evidence at this stage.
The timing would also make sense. Tokyo Game Show kicks off this month, and Sony often likes to ride the wave of September gaming news with a presentation of its own. Whether it’s a full-blown showcase or a smaller State of Play, fans are keen to see what’s next as the PlayStation 5 enters the back half of its lifecycle.
For now, though, it’s important to stress that nothing has been confirmed. Until Sony itself sends out the usual blog post and date, all of this remains in rumour territory. Still, given the chatter, don’t be surprised if the announcement lands any day now.
