Bungie has officially locked in the release date for Marathon. The studio announced that its team-based extraction first-person shooter will launch on March 5 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC via Steam. Alongside the announcement, Bungie has opened pre-orders and detailed the game’s various editions, bonuses, and collector offerings.
Marathon marks Bungie’s return to one of its oldest universes, reimagined through the lens of modern extraction shooters. Rather than a traditional campaign-driven experience, the game is built around high-stakes runs, persistent loot, and squad-based survival.
A New Take on Marathon
Set on the lost colony of Tau Ceti IV, Marathon places players in the role of Runners cybernetic mercenaries hired to scavenge weapons, upgrades, and valuable tech while competing against rival teams and hostile security forces. Crews of three drop into contested zones, and anything you extract successfully carries over into future runs.
Survival is the goal, but risk defines the experience. Players can choose to push deeper into dangerous areas, including the derelict Marathon ship orbiting above the colony, where rewards are greater and mistakes are far more costly.
Bungie is positioning Marathon as an experience that balances accessibility with competitive depth. Starter zones allow players to learn systems and gunplay, while high-risk areas and Ranked mode in season one are aimed at players looking for more intense challenges.

Voice Cast Revealed
Bungie also revealed the English-language voice cast for Marathon, and it’s a stacked lineup. The cast includes Roger Clark, Darin De Paul, Dave Fennoy, Neil Newbon, Ben Starr, Erica Lindbeck, Jennifer English, Elias Toufexis, Nika Futterman, Fred Tatasciore, and many more, signaling a strong narrative and character focus despite the game’s multiplayer structure.
Bungie’s Extraction Shooter Vision
According to Bungie, Marathon is built around experimentation and long-term progression. Each match is an opportunity to test new builds, gear combinations, and Runner abilities. The studio is also emphasizing its commitment to fair play, promising continued investment in anti-cheat measures and dedicated servers.
Gunplay remains a core selling point. Bungie claims its signature shooting mechanics are tuned to feel satisfying across all skill levels, while still rewarding mastery in high-pressure situations.
With its March 5 release date now confirmed and pre-orders live, Marathon is officially stepping into the spotlight. Whether it can carve out space in the increasingly crowded extraction shooter genre remains to be seen but Bungie is clearly positioning it as a long-term platform rather than a one-and-done release.
