Ubisoft Cancels Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake as Six Projects Are Axed, Seven More Delayed

Another day, another delay

Ubisoft has confirmed a major shake-up across its development pipeline, cancelling six games currently in production and delaying seven others as part of what it’s calling a “major organisational, operational and portfolio reset.”

The announcement comes after a two-month internal review of Ubisoft’s content roadmap, with the publisher saying it has reassessed where its resources are best spent over the next three years. The result is a sharper focus on fewer projects, with an emphasis on higher quality and stronger long-term returns.

Among the cancelled titles is Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, a project that has faced a turbulent development cycle since it was first revealed in 2020. Ubisoft confirmed that the remake has been discontinued alongside four unannounced titles — three of which were new IP and a mobile game. The identity of the sixth cancelled project has not been disclosed.

In a statement shared via the official Prince of Persia social channels, the development team addressed fans directly, acknowledging the disappointment surrounding the decision.

The team explained that while the remake still had potential, it wasn’t able to reach the quality bar expected of such a beloved title without significant additional time and investment. Rather than release something that didn’t live up to the legacy of The Sands of Time, Ubisoft chose to stop development entirely. The company stressed that this decision does not signal the end of the Prince of Persia franchise as a whole.

Alongside the cancellations, Ubisoft also confirmed that seven other games have been delayed to ensure they meet what it now describes as “enhanced quality benchmarks.” One of these delays affects an unannounced title originally planned for release in the 2025–26 financial year, which has now been pushed into FY27.

While Ubisoft did not name the project, industry speculation suggests this could be the long-rumoured remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. That belief was fuelled recently by a PEGI listing for “Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced,” although the publisher has not officially confirmed the game’s existence.

Speaking during a media call, Ubisoft CFO Frederick Duguet provided further insight into the reasoning behind the changes. He pointed to an increasingly competitive market where player attention and spending are more selective than ever, making it harder for mid-tier or unfocused projects to succeed.

According to Duguet, Ubisoft has raised its internal quality standards and is now prioritising projects with the strongest long-term potential. This has meant stopping some games outright including multiple new IP while giving others more time to reach a level the company believes can compete at the top of their respective genres.

Despite the cancellations, Ubisoft says it is not abandoning new ideas entirely. The publisher confirmed it still has four new IPs in development, including March of Giants, which it recently acquired, and remains confident those projects can succeed under its revised strategy.

The cancellation of The Sands of Time Remake brings an end to a project that has struggled almost since its announcement. Originally developed by Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai, the remake was slated for a January 2021 release before being delayed multiple times following criticism of its initial reveal. Development was later handed to Ubisoft Montreal, with Ubisoft Toronto joining to assist, and the game was most recently targeting a release before March 2026.

With that now officially off the table, Ubisoft’s reset marks a significant turning point for the company one that prioritises fewer releases, longer development timelines, and a renewed push to reclaim its reputation for high-quality open-world and live-service experiences.
