Moon Studios’ bold pivot away from the genre that made it famous is already paying dividends. No Rest for the Wicked has officially surpassed one million copies sold during its Early Access period, a major milestone for the studio’s first independent release since parting ways with Microsoft.
The achievement is particularly notable given the game’s unfinished state. No Rest for the Wicked launched into Early Access as a demanding, deliberately paced action RPG that wears its influences openly, blending Souls-like combat with a grim, painterly art style and a heavy focus on atmosphere over accessibility. It’s not the kind of game designed to chase mass appeal on day one yet players have clearly responded.
Since launch, Moon Studios has maintained a steady cadence of updates, addressing balance issues, performance concerns, and community feedback while laying out a long-term roadmap for the project. While some Early Access releases stumble under the weight of expectations, No Rest for the Wicked appears to have found its audience early, driven largely by word of mouth and the studio’s reputation for craftsmanship.
The one-million-sales milestone also reinforces the growing viability of Early Access as a launch strategy for mid-sized studios willing to be transparent about development. Rather than positioning the game as a near-finished product, Moon Studios has been upfront about experimentation, iteration, and course correction an approach that seems to be resonating with players eager to be part of the process.
With a full 1.0 release still some distance away, the real test will be whether Moon Studios can sustain momentum and deliver on its ambitious vision. For now, though, No Rest for the Wicked has already achieved something many complete releases fail to do: prove its worth long before the finish line is in sight.
