Bungie has confirmed it will host an open preview weekend for Marathon, giving players across all platforms an early chance to jump into the studio’s upcoming shooter before its full release.
Dubbed the “Server Slam,” the event runs from February 26 at 10 a.m. PT through March 2 at 10 a.m. PT and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Cross-play and cross-save will be fully supported, and the preview will also form part of Steam Next Fest.
With launch set for March 5, Bungie appears keen to stress-test its infrastructure while giving players a meaningful slice of the experience.
What’s Included in the Server Slam?
The Server Slam offers an introductory version of Marathon’s core gameplay loop, featuring:
- A limited selection of maps
- Select Runner shells
- Early contracts
- A curated pool of gear
Bungie notes that additional maps, factions, contracts, and equipment will roll out at launch and continue into Season 1.

Players who complete the introductory mission during the event will receive a commemorative emblem and banner at launch. Bungie is also offering tiered gear packages for players who participate, which will unlock at release and include weapons, implants, and other helpful items designed to give early adopters a head start on their first runs.
It’s a smart incentive: test the servers, reward engagement, and carry progress forward in a tangible way.
PlayStation Plus Weapon Charms Revealed
Bungie also revealed exclusive cosmetic rewards for PlayStation Plus subscribers, with three crossover weapon charms inspired by major PlayStation titles:
- Helldivers II – For Freedom Weapon Charm
- Death Stranding 2: On the Beach – Battle Guitar Weapon Charm
- Ghost of Yotei – Onryo Weapon Charm

These charms will be redeemable via the PlayStation Plus Exclusive Packs page once Marathon launches on March 5.
Bungie confirmed that information regarding cosmetic rewards for Xbox and Steam players will be shared at a later date.
A Final Test Before Launch
With Marathon launching on March 5 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, the Server Slam functions as both a marketing beat and a technical rehearsal. Large-scale previews like this give Bungie a final opportunity to iron out matchmaking, balance issues, and server stability before opening the gates fully.
Given Bungie’s live-service pedigree, expectations are high. February’s Server Slam will likely offer the clearest picture yet of how Marathon’s high-stakes extraction formula feels in players’ hands and whether it’s ready to carry the studio into its next era.
